Dutch Shark Society at Duikvaker 2014

PeterVerhoogDutchSharkSociety_NL DV2014

Dutch Shark Society will be at Duikvaker 2014 on 1 and 2 February. The Dutch Shark Society wants to play an active communicative role between science and people by supporting and making research visible, and developing media initiatives through photography and film via this information platform. .

Worldwide there are more than 400 species of sharks and 600 species of rays and stingrays. Many of them are threatened by overfishing, habitat loss and pollution. These sharks are not only found in international waters. Our 'own' Dutch waters also have a number of species. Little is known about these species and research is still limited.

In addition, much scientific research remains hidden from the general public, as a result of which the protection of sharks and rays does not have broad public support. Unknown unfortunately also makes unloved here. As noted Senegalese environmental activist Baba Dioum puts it:

[intense_blockquote color=”#ffffff” font_color=”#515151″ rightalign=”1″]Eventually we will protect only what we love, we will only love what we can understand…[/intense_blockquote]

The Dutch Shark Society wants to be an active link between science and the public by supporting research, making it visible and developing media initiatives through photography and film within an information platform. In addition, this non-profit organization strives for a broad collaboration with other authorities and institutes in this field, but also with the diving industry, professional and recreational fisheries.
