Restore Bonaire's Coral Reef: Take the Reef Renewal Course!
Coral reefs are fragile and are threatened worldwide by factors such as climate change, pollution and other human impacts. These challenges weaken the coral and disrupt the biodiversity of the reef, which throws life in the ocean out of balance. Fortunately, we can take action here on Bonaire: with coral restoration projects such as Reef Renewal, you too can make an important contribution!
During the Reef Renewal Course you will actively help restore elkhorn and staghorn coral in one and a half days. You will learn techniques for planting and maintaining coral trees, and eventually build your own underwater coral garden.
The course is divided into three dives. The first dive offers an introduction to maintaining a coral tree: you remove fire coral, worms and algae, so that the small corals can grow undisturbed. The second dive goes deeper into coral fragmentation. You cut larger coral pieces into smaller fragments, which you add back to the coral tree using a special looping technique. During the last dive you move the coral pieces that are large enough to plant on the reef to carefully selected locations. Your own underwater garden is created before your eyes, and you see directly how your work helps restore the reef.
