Alex Cornelissen, CEO Sea Shepherd Global, speaker at Duikvaker 2017
Alex Cornelissen speaks during Duikvaker on the stage of Duikvaker 2017.
In 2002, Dutchman Alex Cornelissen signed on as a volunteer crew member on Sea Shepherd flagship Farley Mowat. Alex quit his job and sold his apartment. The intention was to stay on board for one year, but that year changed his life forever. Alex witnessed the destruction of life in the oceans and decided he couldn't stand idly by as the oceans die.
In April 2003 he became Chief Mate and in early February 2006 Paul Watson, Sea Shepherd Founder and Chairman, promoted Alex Cornelissen to Captain of the Farley Mowat. He has commanded virtually all ships in the Sea Shepherd fleet.
Cornelissen has also been in charge of Sea Shepherd's projects in the Galápagos Islands for many years since the end of 2007. In late 2013, he was named CEO of Sea Shepherd Global.
